How the Nisab and rates work for crops

The Qur’an commands paying the due on produce on the day of harvest, and the hadith gives the rate: one-tenth (Ushr) on land watered by rain, rivers or springs, and half of that, one-twentieth, on land watered by effort or expense such as pumps, wells or paid canal water. Where both apply, the dominant method decides, and 7.5% is used when they are equal.

Nisab: the majority hold that no Ushr is due below five wasq (about 653 kg). Imam Abu Hanifa held that Ushr is due on any amount. Both views can be selected above. No lunar year is required; each harvest is assessed separately.

Frequently asked questions

What is Ushr and how much is it?
Ushr is the Zakat on agricultural produce. Land watered by rain, rivers or springs pays one-tenth (10%); land irrigated by pumps, wells or paid canal water pays one-twentieth (5%). If both methods are used, the dominant one applies, and 7.5% when they are equal.
What is the Nisab for Ushr?
According to the majority of scholars, including Abu Yusuf and Muhammad al-Shaybani, the Nisab is five wasq, about 653 kg; below that no Ushr is due. Imam Abu Hanifa held there is no Nisab and Ushr is due on any quantity. This calculator offers both views.
Can I deduct the cost of seed, fertiliser and labour?
In the Hanafi school and the majority view, production costs are not deducted, because the effort of irrigation is already recognised by the lower 5% rate. Some scholars allow deducting seed and fertiliser; paying on the full harvest is the safer course.
Does Ushr require a full lunar year?
No. Ushr becomes due at harvest, with no lunar year condition. If there are two harvests in a year, each is assessed separately. It may be paid in kind (wheat, rice) or in its value.
