How the Nisab works for gold
The gold Nisab is 87.48 g (20 mithqal) of pure gold. Most jewellery is 22K, 21K or 18K, so its weight must first be converted to pure gold: 22K is 91.67% pure, 21K is 87.5% and 18K is 75%. For example, 90 g of 21K jewellery contains about 79 g of pure gold, which is below the Nisab on its own. If you also hold cash or silver, however, everything is combined and compared with the Nisab, and Zakat may then be due on the whole.
Two cases: (1) You hold gold only, no cash or silver: no Zakat if the pure weight is under 87.48 g. (2) You hold gold plus cash or silver: combine their value and compare with the Nisab standard you selected; if it is reached, 2.5% is due on everything. The checkbox above switches between the two.
