How this Zakat calculator works
Zakat is the third pillar of Islam and its calculation takes three steps. First, all your zakatable assets are added up: cash, bank balances, savings-circle contributions, the current value of gold and silver, investments, trade goods and money you expect to recover from others. Then debts due within the year are deducted. If what remains is at or above the Nisab, 2.5% of it is your Zakat.
Which Nisab? Nisab is the value of 87.48 g of gold or 612.36 g of silver. Hanafi scholars use the silver Nisab for mixed wealth; the other schools generally use gold. This calculator pulls today’s prices daily and computes both; if prices cannot be loaded, simply enter today’s price per gram.
What is not zakatable?
- Your home, personal car, furniture, clothing and other items for personal use.
- Business machinery, premises and fixtures (they are not trade goods).
- Property held for personal use; property bought with the intention to resell is trade goods.
Hawl: when does your Zakat year start?
The day your wealth first reached the Nisab becomes your Zakat date. One lunar year later, on the same Hijri date, Zakat is due on whatever zakatable wealth you hold then, even if it rose and fell in between. Many people fix a date in Ramadan so it is easy to remember. Save your date in the Hawl tracker above and this page will show your next Zakat date in both Hijri and Gregorian calendars, and reset the year if your wealth drops below the Nisab.

Frequently asked questions
What is the Nisab for Zakat?
Nisab is the minimum wealth on which Zakat becomes due: the value of 87.48 g of pure gold or 612.36 g of pure silver. Hanafi scholars apply the silver Nisab when cash, gold and silver are mixed; the Shafi’i, Maliki and Hanbali schools generally use the gold Nisab. This calculator computes both from today’s prices.
How is Zakat calculated?
Add up all zakatable assets (cash, bank balances, gold and silver value, trade goods, investments), deduct debts due within the year, and if the remainder is at or above the Nisab after a full lunar year, pay 2.5% of it.
Do I pay Zakat on my salary or on my savings?
Zakat is not a tax on income. It is due on the zakatable wealth you hold on your Zakat date, whatever its source. Salary that has been spent is not counted; salary that is still in your account on that date is.
What is the Hawl and how do I fix my Zakat date?
The Hawl is one lunar year. The day your wealth first reached the Nisab starts your year, and Zakat is due on the same Hijri date the following year on whatever you hold then. If your wealth drops to zero or below the Nisab in between, the year restarts. The Hawl tracker on this page shows both Hijri and Gregorian dates.
I have not paid Zakat for several years. What should I do?
Zakat for each missed year remains a debt owed to the poor and must be paid based on the wealth you held that year. If you cannot remember exact figures, estimate them as best you can. This page has a separate missed-years estimator.
